Increasing global clout of the Chinese economy and China's financial liberalisation gives renminbi an increasingly important role in world trade and investment. The recent financial crisis has generated even greater attention on the prospects for renminbi, including its potential of becoming a major reserve currency. The speech will take stock of China's currency reforms in recent years and discuss renminbi's international role in the future. Drawing on her work at Hong Kong Monetary Authority on Hong Kong's renminbi business, the speaker will also share with the audience her views on the implication of the renminbi's rising importance for Hong Kong in the years ahead.

Holder of a Northwestern University PhD in Economics, Dr CUI heads the Mainland research and policy issues division at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, with the responsibilities of overseeing researches on Mainland's macroeconomic and financial market developments and their implications for the region; promoting policy initiatives toward Mainland and Hong Kong financial market integration; and facilitating policy implementation. Previously, she worked in the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC, covering a range of economies over the years, including China and Hong Kong. She has published various papers on China's economic structure, export dependence, and macroeconomic balance, featuring in reputable publications such as Financial Times, the Economist, and Bloomberg News.
